đ« What Is a Safety Flightâand Should You Book One?
By Natalie âflyGIRLâ Kelley | Wheels Up: The flyGIRL Blog
Youâve found your dream destination. Youâve got the points. Youâve marked your calendar.
But⊠award space just isnât opening up. đ©
If youâre like me and love booking trips with points and miles, youâve probably run into the nerve-wracking game of waiting for that perfect award seat to drop. And thatâs where a safety flight can swoop in and save the day.
âïž Whatâs a Safety Flight?
A safety flight is a backup booking you makeâusually with points or fully refundable cashâjust in case the real award flight you want doesnât become available.
Itâs like travel insurance, but DIY.
Youâre locking in something, so you donât get stuck without a way to get there if the award calendar doesnât play nice.
đ§ Why Use This Strategy?
Award seats, especially in premium cabins, often open closer to departure. Airlines wait to see how cash bookings fill up before releasing their award inventory. So even if a business class seat should be available, it might not show up until a week or two before your trip (sometimes even the day before đŹ).
If youâve already booked your hotel (on points, of course) or requested time off work, you donât want to be left scrambling. Thatâs when a safety flight gives you peace of mind.
đ How to Book One
Hereâs how I use safety flights in my own travel plans:
-
Search for a Plan B
Find an available flightâmaybe in economy, maybe on a less-than-ideal airline or timeâbut one that gets you to your destination around the right dates. -
Use Flexible Points or Cash
Book with points that can be refunded (Amex or Chase through their travel portals, for example), or with airlines that offer free cancellations or changes. -
Set Alerts & Monitor
Tools like ExpertFlyer, Seats.aero, or AwardLogic can help you track award availability. Also, just checking daily can pay offâespecially for partners like ANA, Lufthansa, or Qatar. -
Swap It Out When the Real Deal Appears
As soon as the premium cabin or ideal flight becomes available, cancel your safety flight and book the one you actually wanted.
đ Real Life Example
On a recent trip to Europe, I had my heart set on flying business class using points. But the award space from the U.S. to Paris wasnât available yet. So, I used Chase points to book a refundable economy ticket on Air France.
Sure enough, about 10 days out, business class opened up through a transfer partner. I grabbed the seat, canceled my original booking, and popped some champagne at 35,000 feet. đŸ
𧳠Final Boarding Call
Safety flights may not be glamorousâbut theyâre smart.
When youâre juggling time off, family schedules, and limited award availability, having a backup can keep your trip from falling apart.
Itâs one of my favorite behind-the-scenes hacksâand now itâs one of yours too.
