Points and Miles Are Not Just for Spreadsheet Men

For a long time, the points-and-miles world seemed like it belonged to men who enjoy spreadsheets, airport codes and explaining things nobody asked them to explain.

You know the type. They can tell you the seat layout on five different airplanes but somehow packed six identical shirts for a three-day trip.

I assumed points were complicated, obsessive and probably not worth the effort. Then I realized they could help pay for flights, hotels and trips I might not otherwise book. Suddenly, I was interested.

Here is what I wish more women knew: points are not about trying to outsmart the system. They are about being smarter with money you are already spending.

Groceries. Gas. Dining. Bills. Business expenses.

If you are already paying for these things, why not let some of that spending help pay for your next trip?

The mistake people make is opening random credit cards without a plan. They hear someone online say an offer is amazing, so they apply. Then they end up with a pile of points they do not know how to use.

Start with the trip. Where do you want to go? Which airlines fly there? Which hotel programs have places where you would actually want to stay? Then build your points strategy around that.

You do not need twenty credit cards. You do not need a spreadsheet with twelve tabs. And you definitely do not need to learn everything in one day.

You need a few basic rules. Pay the balance in full. Do not spend extra just to earn points. Understand the benefits you are paying for. And never go into debt for “free” travel.

Because let’s be honest: it is not free. Anyone saying otherwise is probably trying to sell you something.

But points can make travel more affordable. They can help you sit in a better seat, stay in a nicer hotel or take a trip sooner than you thought.

You do not have to become an expert overnight. Pick a destination. Learn one program. Ignore the men arguing online about whether a point is worth 1.7 or 1.8 cents.

Book the trip. Enjoy the seat.
