There were some unexpected challenges I faced when I started flying for work. Yes, there are a lot of pros with the life of a pilot but there are some cons as well. Anyone who travels often for work knows what the trials are when you’re on the road (or in the air!).
This kind of life can be exciting, but it can also take a toll on your health if you’re not careful.
Here are some of my top tips for frequent flyers:
Stay hydrated: Traveling can dehydrate you, especially if you’re flying. Drink plenty of water throughout your journey to stay hydrated and avoid fatigue.
Eat well: It can be tempting to indulge in fast food or airport snacks, but try to eat nutritious meals whenever possible. Look for restaurants that offer healthy options, or pack your own snacks like fruits, nuts, or granola bars (I always take a cooler and fill it with hotel fruits or stop at a store for celery sticks, carrots, etc).
Exercise regularly: Traveling can disrupt your exercise routine (understatement!), but try to incorporate physical activity into your schedule. You can go for a walk or jog in a new city, use the hotel gym, or do a quick workout in your room.
Get enough sleep: Traveling across time zones can disrupt your sleep patterns. This is a huge hurdle for pilots because your schedule is unpredictable each day. Sleep when you can, as much as you can!
Manage stress: Traveling for work can be stressful, so it’s important to find ways to relax. Practice deep breathing, meditation, or yoga to help you unwind after a long day.
Stay germ-free: Airports and airplanes are breeding grounds for germs. Wash your hands regularly, avoid touching your face, and carry hand sanitizer to keep germs at bay.
Stay connected: Keep in touch with loved ones back home to help you feel grounded (no pun intended) and reduce feelings of loneliness or isolation.
Be prepared: Pack essentials like medications, vitamins, and first aid supplies to ensure you can stay healthy on the go. Of course pilots must pack light, use travel pill
containers. Don’t forget gym clothes!
