Spain, AmEx Portals, and the “Value” Trap: A Reality Check
I’ve got more trips booked for 2026 than I’ve ever had, but I’m still buzzing from the trip I wrapped up at the end of December 2025. I took my youngest son to Madrid and Barcelona, and while the “points pros” might have notes on my methods, the trip was a massive success.
Here is exactly how I balanced points and cash—and why I’d do it again in a heartbeat.
The Milestone: Our First Lie-Flat Seats
This was a year of firsts. Thanks to maximizing points and miles, my son and I both flew in lie-flat business seats for the first time.

Early Check-In is a Human Right: We landed in Europe early in the morning after a red-eye. Because I booked through Fine Hotels & Resorts and The Hotel Collection, we didn’t have to wander the streets like zombies until 3:00 PM. We got in early, showered, and actually enjoyed our first day.

The “Free” Perks: Between the included breakfasts (a huge money saver) and the $100 resort credits for food and drinks, the math worked out in our favor.

Don’t Be a “Museum Zombie”

Get a Guide: Walking through a museum without knowing what you’re looking at is a snooze-fest. I hired guides for the museums and walking tours to keep it engaging for both of us.

Celebrate the 21st: My son turned 21 just days before we left, so I booked a Spanish cocktail-making class and a paella-making experience.

The 10:00 AM Rule: It’s a vacation, not a marathon. We didn’t start a single tour before 9:00 or 10:00 AM. We’d do a tour, grab lunch, and then have the afternoon to chill.
The Bottom Line
If you’re waiting to use your points for the “perfect” valuation, you’re missing out on actual travel. Sometimes convenience and comfort beat “maximum value.”
